I think my mom may have an eating disorder, how do I talk to her about it?
Question by *STAR*: I think my mom may have an eating disorder, how do I talk to her about it?
My mom is a very nice woman, she just finally got over breast cancer, and the loss of her mother to cancer, and the news to her sister now terminally ill from cancer. Her and my Dad have been togeather for almost 30 years and things have been a little rocky between them. Some of the medicines she had to take while battleing her cancer made her gain weight. Well now she is on this trip to lose it all and lost 45lbs in just 2 months, she monitors whatever she puts into her mouth, and only takes in 600 calories per day! If I try to talk to her about it it turns in to an hour long conversation about everything she has eaten in the past two weeks. And I used to have an eating disorder, so i know the signs. I don’t know how to talk to her about it. Any ideas?

this is an extremely sensitive subject with most women and i can understand your dilemna. unfortunately, there is not much you can do that will make this any easier for you or her.
perhaps you can sit down with her at a time when you are both feeling up to it, and first ask her how she is feeling, how she is handling everything and gradually get into it.
i find that it is much easier to get people talking about things that they are uncomfortable with if i show them that i trust them first. i am always extremely open and honest with everyone.
you can also just let her know that you are not judging her, condemning her or in any way intending to hurt her. that kind of reassurance has helped my relationships immensely. it works in most situations. people need to feel safe when they are tackling things that hurt or scare them.
good luck with it, and i hope she can see how much you love her.
